24: Sue Lowman on being the first internationally adopted person in Ontario
Hi everyone, and thank you for tuning in to episode 24 of the Learn With Lels podcast.
On this episode, I spoke with Susan Lowman, the first internationally adopted person in Ontario.
This conversation was amazing; Susan’s story is so unique and incredible. She was abandoned in an apartment building in Hong Kong when she was a baby, was moved to an orphanage, and was adopted at age four by a Canadian family. At the time, international adoption was a brand-new concept in Canada, as, up until that point, Canadians were only allowed to adopt other Canadians.
In this conversation, Susan and I talked about:
her adoption story and some of the amazing anecdotes she has from that difficult transition into Canadian life;
her thoughts about her biological family and what’d she would say to her biological parents if she were to ever meet them;
advice for those who are trying to navigate the world of adoption; and
advice for those who are figuring themselves out and trying to belong in a world where they stand out in every way.
Susan’s story is so compelling. She’s experienced and learned so much on her trailblazing path, and I hope that you enjoy listening to her speak about it.
