You might think you look cool, but you could be wrong

You know when you think you look cool, but then you see a picture or video of yourself and realize that you don’t?

Well, that’s where I’m at right now.

I’ve gone out longboarding every day (see below and click for the ones with play buttons), trying to do a spin on my board.

As I was practicing, I thought, “Shit, I must look so gnarly. I should go to the skatepark and start shopping at West 49.”

This is what I look like.

I unfortunately don’t look cool at all—skill-wise or outfit-wise.

I was on my lunch break in this video, so I’m actually wearing my work pants—which I’m now realizing make me look like a grandpa. Plus, I forgot to bring my helmet, so I was even more scared than usual while recording this.

While I do wish that I were better and that warmer weather were on its way so I could practice more, it may not really look like it, but I am improving. Very, very slowly, but I am. You can refer back to my last post for proof of that.

I’ve always liked sports, and I like to think that I’m pretty good at catching on when it comes to athletics. But longboard dancing has proven to be quite different. Actually, hockey I was very shit at too. I couldn’t really shoot in basketball either. Badminton I was basically deadweight on the court. It did take me 25 years to be able to do a lane swim. Hmm, maybe I’m actually not athletic at all…

Any who, while on the topic of swimming, I’ve been trying to hit the pool over the past few days, since I’ll be going to the Dominican Republic on Sunday! Thank you, Jesus!!!

A lot of memories in this pool. I used to pee in it all the time.

While I’m there, I’m going to fulfill my lifelong dream: I’m going to learn to surf!

It’ll only be for one day, so hopefully I’ll catch on quicker with surfing than I have with other sports. And hopefully I don’t see any sharks. But I’m practicing my swimming so that if I do see sharks, I’ll be able to get away—assuming I can out-swim them with my elementary backstroke.

Tune in next week to see me living out my Blue Crush dream.

What I’ve learned/some realizations:

  • You might think you look cool, but you could be wrong. (Said in Gretchen Wieners’ voice.)

  • I’m naturally bad at most things.

  • I’m gonna be on the beach soon, so it’s fine.
