Merry Chrysler

Hi!!! I hope you had a Merry Christmas!!!

I won’t lie, I’ve never really contributed anything to Christmas dinner… until this year, that is! (It’s not that I’ve been lazy every other year, it’s that Filipino moms will shoo you away when you try to help, and then they’ll get mad that they did everything on their own.)

Since the start of December, I’ve eaten my body weight in cookies and chocolate, so I decided to make an app instead of something sweet.

I found this festive little thang on the Pillsbury website and decided to take a stab at it.

It called for two cans of Pillsbury crescent rolls, garlic and herb Boursin cheese, melted butter, and chopped parsley. Since the standard Filipino diet consists basically of just carbs and meat, I felt it was important that I added some prosciutto to the mix.

The recipe was actually very simple. (But you know me, in the kitchen, I’m usually still able to ef things up.)

Cut the crescents in half. Add a little ball of cheese and meat.

Roll them up and place them like a tree.

Bake ‘em at 375°F for 20 minutes. Then brush some melted butter and sprinkle some parsley on top. I did this part at the family Christmas party I went to so the tree’d be fresh.

I’m just realizing that I put the rolls horizontally, while the real one had them placed vertically. Oh well.

My family is rude.

Mine looked like the Pillsbury one, eh?! Though, quite the difference in quality of picture, lol. If you have any tips on taking pics of food, please hit me up.

I won’t lie, I was quite nervous and sweaty to serve this to my family. While Filipinos are some of the nicest people in the world, they’re also not afraid to say mean things to you. The mean things usually have to do with you being fat, even if you’re not. (Look, there are lots of articles and blogs about it: 'You've gotten fatter!': Why our culture and families should stop commenting on weight, Is Body Shaming Part of Our Filipino Culture?, LET’S TALK ABOUT BODY SHAMING IN THE PHILIPPINES.)

Any who… No one had any negative comments about my weight this Christmas. But they did have lots of positive things to say about my food!

I’m so happy!

Ughs. Teenagers. But look, the tree is gone!

Defs recommend trying this recipe. Take it from clumsy old me, it’s easy to make this appetizer look and taste good!

What I’ve learned/some realizations:

  • Ain’t no better place to be than with family on Christmas.

  • I was watching Love Actually while I was making this. Is anyone else so annoyed that they keep calling Natalie fat? Like, ef off, she’s not fat! There was definitely a Filipino aunt on the writing team for that movie.

  • I can contribute to Christmas dinner, and I can make pretty apps! Hehe.
